Summary of Poker Room
Cake Poker presents an interesting veneer when you open up the online lobby. The coffee-tones suggest something of old-age golden Hollywood glamour, and I am sure that this is the intended theme; harkening back to an age where gambling was at her height in the US. Unfortunately, the thin veneer stretches only as far as the lobby, and the actual game play could end up as something of a disappointment to many. The software more represents the kind of program you would expect as a free windows game rather than a downloadable application. Play moves at a pace which would stay appealing to most, but does so with a rather unpleasant jerk. Chips do not glide smoothly over the online felt so much as they scrape, and player avatars are kept as very basic, entirely random symbols. The gaming window size is adjustable, but make it too big and you will quickly find graphics going fuzzy around the edges.
Promotions and Bonus Information
Cake Poker offers players the chance to refer a friend, and will pay players a total of $100 for every friend which they invite. Payment is made in $25 increments each time your friend makes 500 Frequent Player Points. New players also have the chance to receive a 110% first-deposit bonus of up to $600, as well as earning a ticket to the $500 New Depositor Freeroll. Cake Poker also offers its own shop where players can trade in their Frequent Player Points for gadgets, clothing, tournament buy-ins, bikes and real chocolate cake.
Poker Traffic
As with many online poker sites, traffic at Cake picks up around early evening CET. Activity tends to centre around the no limit hold'em cash games, up to the $2/$4 mark. Microgames also enjoy a healthy population, but high-stakes players may wish to look elsewhere.
Software and Graphics
Overall, game play graphics and software are entirely poor. The table is a classic set-up of green felt, but unlike other sites which go for endearing modern minimalism, Cake poker is simple to the point of insulting. The format would not look out of place in a Windows 95 platform (remember those?) or perhaps even pre-95 operating systems. Players may well find themselves dragging the window into ever-bigger proportions in an attempt to see the ridiculously small fonts employed in the chat-box and player nicknames, but will soon find that details such as card-faces begin to blur. Other features so frequently employed as commonplace additions in other online poker rooms are also sadly lacking, such as a current 'best-hand' indicator, percentages of wins during a showdown, and even pleasant sound effects. Overall poker at Cake represents nothing more than the disappointment of an unfulfilled promise set up by the well-organised and visually appealing lobby, but which game play which fails to deliver on all fronts.
Game Variety
Cake Poker offers Texas Hold'em, Omaha and Omaha Hi/Lo. Players can also filter the tables by size, stakes, buy-in and speed. The lobby includes links to cake's online Casino and Mini Casino for a variety of other gaming options.
Tournaments and Free rolls
Cake Poker offers a selection of various tournaments and freerolls. During February the Gold Spree sets personalised targets for each player.
